Many who live in the United States of America, a land that Puritan leader John Winthrop once memorably described as "a City on a Hill," are asking themselves, with ever increasing urgency, "What has happened to American culture?"

Citizens are now more deeply divided on social and political issues than at any time since, quite possibly, the Civil War. A once vibrant middle class is slowly disappearing and giving way to a sharp societal cleavage between rich and poor. The English language, a tie of national solidarity and an essential ingredient of the American Melting Pot, into which immigrants were once immersed and assimilated to American life, has been supplanted by institutionalized multiculturalism, where millions upon millions of newcomers to the country are actively encouraged to hold onto their native languages, traditions, customs, and habits. Instead of the rich orchestral symphony that multiculturalism promises, a chaotic and cacophonous Tower of Babel appears to be emerging.

Accordingly, the nation's institutions, which Justice William O. Douglas opined "presuppose a Supreme Being," are undergoing radical secularization. The view that the founding fathers set out to construct a nation that is "godless" in its public life presently enjoys almost universal academic acceptance. "Public reason" demonstrates that it has no room for the language of faith. Public schools, including academies of higher learning, have purchased this strait-jacket orthodoxy and are, not surprisingly, characterized by "political correctness," constituting the new face of censorship and book-burning in our time. Biology instructors, for example, must be meticulously careful what they say and do not say about Darwin's theory. The spirit of political correctness pervades virtually every nook and cranny of our lives.

But Americans are assured that they are still free. The philosophy of liberalism, according to prevailing thought, makes government a neutral arbiter of values. In this way, citizens can cultivate their own autonomous notion of "the good life." If they wish to abort a fetus, assist in a suicide, indulge in multiple forms of sexual depravity, smoke pot, desecrate the American flag, or otherwise steer a course as greedy and as self-centered as seems humanly possible, it is, so the liberal mantra goes, not for the government or anyone else to say otherwise. There is, after all, a separation between church and state, is there not?

In a new book, aptly entitled America Unraveling: A Politically Incorrect Analysis of Public Faith and Culture, Dr. L. Scott Smith distinguishes himself as a fresh, critical voice of social and political reform. His critique of American culture is scathing, while his scholarship, reasoning, and simple logic are tough-minded and courageous. His book explains and defends the "public faith" of America, explodes the myth of the "godless Constitution," explores the rise of secularism and the capitulation of mainline Protestantism to it, dissects the philosophy of liberalism, criticizes the United States Supreme Court as a "krytocracy," considers the destructive trends of the country's immigration policy, and – finally – charts a course forward.

This book is a MUST READ for any citizen who is troubled about the social and political quagmire in which the country is currently bogged down. Purchase it; read it; study it; and recommend it to your friends. You will not regret it!
