Disturbing Questions: Has God Stopped Blessing America?

buyitnowfrontcoversmall

ISBN: 978-0-9795394-0-4

Our Balance of Trade has been negative since the early ‘70’s and getting increasingly worse. Our national debt is unprecedented; we can no longer afford our lifestyles.  We’re embroiled in a war against terror, and natural disasters are taking greater tolls. We no longer feel we can trust anyone, especially our political and business leaders.

Although we’ve always had problems, this massive downward slide seems to have started right after Roe vs. Wade! Could this be more than just coincidence? Is it possible God has stopped Blessing America, despite the popularity of the Irving Berlin song, since our acceptance of legalized abortion?

As recent Supreme Court Justice confirmation hearings have shown, abortion is the most controversial topic in America! Beyond controversial, it’s deeply emotional.  Additionally, we are losing jobs to operations offshore in record numbers! Our unemployed and underemployed are two of our fastest growing classes. Could it be that abortion has consequences beyond the convenient disappearance of unwanted pregnancies?

Veiled Honor

veiled front coverbuyitnow

ISBN: 978-0-9824982-4-8

Veiled Honor is a must read for every American. It contains powerful information that could change your views of world events. Mary Laurel Ross has chronicled the significant occasions of her life by connecting them in a time line with events taking place on the world’s stage, resulting in a fascinating multi-layered book.

For the military family there is obvious relevance in Veiled Honor. Written from the perspective of an educator and the wife of a career military officer, the book defines the struggles and challenges of the military family as an exciting adventure well worth the effort required.

The history enthusiast will enjoy reading the chronology of Middle Eastern conflicts, the role Saudi Arabia played in them, the irony of dubious alliances, and the resultant impact on all our lives. The author provides an intelligent analysis of those conflicts and gives ample documentation to support her conclusions.

Advocates for women’s rights and religious freedom will be challenged by the shocking descriptions of life for females living under the strictest interpretation of Islamic law. The author speaks honestly and candidly about Muslim cultures in the Middle East and specifically in Saudi Arabia where she was given a revealing view from inside the restricted life of Saudi women. Few non-Muslims have had the experiences she writes about.

And finally, Veiled Honor takes the reader on a journey down the path leading to the attack on America of 9-11 by giving context to the events and personalities involved in the deadly terrorist act. You will be intrigued by the connection between major players who plotted the destruction of America.

"The book is meticulously researched and richly detailed. It is both credible and relevant. As a pilot who flew in Desert Shield in late 1990 and spent time in Persian Gulf states including Saudi Arabia, I can attest to the accuracy of her writing. Reading the author’s description of Khamis Mushayt, for example, was like landing, once again, in that remote air station. It was described exactly as I remembered.

I became acquainted with Mary Laurel Ross over forty years ago when her husband and I attended Air Force Flight School together. That she so quickly became friends with persons of diametrically opposed cultures is totally consistent with her friendly, outgoing, and gentle personality and of no surprise to me. Reading her book was like sitting down with old friends for a most enjoyable evening of stimulating conversation, provocative thought, and nostalgic reminiscing."

Reading Veiled Honor took me back to my fifteen years of missionary service in the Muslim nation of Bangladesh. Time and again the images conjured up by Mary Laurel Ross in Saudi Arabia found their counterparts in my own and my wife’s experiences living in a Muslim land. This volume contains information gained only through living among and interacting with Muslims within their own cultures. Ross presents a fair and balanced viewpoint – sensitivity to the Muslims’ view of their own culture and beliefs as well as the objectivity of a keen outside observer. The author interweaves pertinent historical data with her own personal encounters. Cameos of those whom she came to know and love accent her poignant plea for change in the status of women living under the veil in Islam.

A second group of cameos introduces readers to some key figures in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the United States. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the author informs her readers, attended a Baptist college in North Carolina where non-Muslim students tossed his shoes and the shoes of other praying Muslims into the campus lake (20). This humiliated and frustrated individual became the engineer for 9/11. His nephew, Ramzi Yousef, carried out the 1993 attack on the World Trade Center in New York (29). Abdullah Azzam (23), Osama bin Laden (45-46), Mohammed Atta (230), and Ziad Samir Jarrah (298) make their appearances in brief but informative introductions. One full chapter chronicles the life of Mohammed, the founder of Islam (“Allah’s Messenger,” 317-27).

In her chapters on “Shari’a” (117-45) and honor killing, “In the Name of Honor,” (303-10) Mrs. Ross paints a vivid picture of the abuse of females in the Muslim world. One horrendous tragedy symbolizes the oppression of females in the Islamic world: a March 2002 fire in a girls’ school in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (125). Because the girls did not have access to proper attire that would allow them to exit the building, the religious police would not allow them to leave the burning structure. Fifteen teen-aged girls perished in the flames. …The Muslim concept of honor justifies both the abuse of women and radical Islamic terrorism (310).

In an “Afterword” (363) Mrs. Ross pays tribute to Neda Agha-Soltan the victim of a sniper during Iranian anti-government demonstration in the streets of Teheran in June 2009. A Muslim woman’s voice and death cry out for freedom from oppression and abuse.

Every person with an interest in learning about Islam and about the Middle Eastern Muslim cultures should read Veiled Honor.

Mirror of Heaven

ISBN: 978-0-9824982-8-6

In the search for truth and significance, many Christians have allowed their thoughts to become entangled somewhere between creationism and the perceived creditableness of evolution.  Mirror of Heaven points to a powerful, creative God who knew exactly what He was doing when He spoke the world into being.  His intent, from before the beginning, has been to make Himself known to mankind.  God has used His innovative powers to place innumerable object lessons into this world knowing that we, as frail, sinful humans, would desperately need them to even begin to understand His spiritual truths. Mirror of Heaven has been written with a zealous prayer that Christians will seek the Lord fervently and develop a deep love for His word.\

Time Zones: Slipping Away

Alzheimer’s disease is the quintessential adversary, the enemy at the gate, and the pervasive disease of mankind. By whatever label or measuring stick you use, the disease does get and deserve our constant attention. It strips the individual of their uniqueness, those hard earned attributes we prize as memory, awareness, judgment, and indeed personality among others. Soon we have to rely on others to remind us and piece together our journey here on Earth. With the cruelest of intentions, it is no respecter of race, religion, economic status, or philosophy, but its strong suit is its ability to ravage the aged of the population and occasionally the younger. There is hope that medical research will define a reliable biomarker, its pathophysiology, and a disease-modifying treatment worthy of consideration. Winston Churchill once said, “Never, never, never quit!”. No doubt, this statement encouraged his embattled countrymen of World War II. That phrase is appropriate for the task at hand, if only we can all remember never to lose that resolve.

Anyone who is fortunate enough to read Mr. Terry's moving account of his experience with Early-Onset Alzheimer's Disease will come away with a deep appreciation of not only its cognitive effects, but its emotional, spiritual, and interpersonal impact as well. As a reader and a professional who works with older adults, he beautifully illustrates how hope and optimism can be culled from the darkest of places with the aid of faith, social support, self-education, and positive thinking. His 'Ezekiel's Wheel Vision' conceptualization of well-being is a perfect complement to the research literature on maximizing quality of life and longevity, and adds a much-needed humanistic perspective to the study of the science of Alzheimer's Disease. When teaching about dementia I will be recommending this book to all of my students in order to dispel the myth that "nothing can be done once an Alzheimer's diagnosis is made." I can say with confidence that readers can grow both professionally and personally as a result of having read Wayne's "labor of love."

Prayer, Faith and a Bit of Chocolate

97809795394662buyitnow

ISBN: 978-0-9795394-6-6

The stories in this book are about prayer and trust in God. Turning to God in everyday living and especially in difficult times, acknowledges our trust in Him and our complete dependence on Him. God answers our prayers in the manner He believes will serve us best. Sometimes, the answer is hard to understand, especially when the answer given is not what was asked for. But—in due time, our Merciful Savior always gives us more and better than we prayed for. Have faith that He listens. Prayers are always answered. Remember that with God’s help, we can also help ourselves. We can indulge in the God-given comforts of Earth. It’s possible to minimize stress by practicing deep breathing, by walking for exercise, and by talking with family and friends. And—it helps to partake in a bite—or a bit more—of His “Divinely Delicious” chocolate for comfort. Chocolate delivers a bunch of antioxidants and feel-good chemicals to the brain as well as comfort to the taste buds. We bet that God approves of using a bit of His chocolate to help us out! So—we added favorite recipes for chocolate comfort between the stories. Pray a lot. Trust God. And—it’s O.K. to have a bite of God’s comfort-giving chocolate now and again. Then, don’t forget to give praise and thanksgiving for His blessings.

God bless you,    Rosemarie, Diane and Sallie

Holy Man Secular Job

9780979539497buyitnow

ISBN: 978-0-9795394-9-7

Have you ever wondered if the Lord really cares about where you work? Does He place value on your career? Does it make any difference to Him if you are a plumber or a pilot? Does He love pastors, evangelists and missionaries more than others? Does God view your job as being something more than just the source of a paycheck? Is being here on this job part of God’s intentional plan or is it just filler in between becoming an adult and going to Heaven?

Most committed Christians have a desire to live their lives in a manner that would ignite a desire in their co-workers to follow Christ. However, their examples tend to be either the “soap box lunchroom preacher” or the “silent witness.” Most of these Christians do not identify with either extreme. They are longing for practical ways to take what they are experiencing in their hearts and display it to those on their jobs.

In this book, I address these questions as well as many of the issues that most Christians grapple with throughout their careers. I believe that where we work and how we view our jobs has the possibility of having eternal significance. Therefore, God is very interested in our career and where we work. Our occupation is not just an afterthought in the mind of God.

The Christian and the Struggle With Truth

buyitnowStruggle_for_Truth

ISBN: 0-9779407-0-5

The great struggle that all believers are involved in is a struggle between good and evil.  But it is not a struggle of good deeds versus evil deeds, or being "Christian" versus a "non-Christian", as is so commonly thought today.  It is a struggle between truth and deception.  This is where the real battle is being waged.  How we think determines the kind of choices we make.  What we understand to be true will determine the priorities that we set in our lives.

When it comes to dealing with sin, the purpose of our salvation, the reason for churches to hold services, the importance of the Bible, or even what defines one as a Christian, all these have a part in the real struggle that takes place in our world – the struggle between truth and deception.  This struggle, if we rightly understand it, should cause us to place a high value on the book we call the Bible.

There are some things running around in what is called evangelical Christianity that  are troubling to me.  These troubling "things" I believe are the result of either a lazy study of scripture, a desire for popularity, or just plain ignorance.  At any rate, they express what I call sloppy Christianity with no real concern for truth.  Originally, I wrote this as a response to these troubling things and then went through what I had written with my church.

As a pastor it is my responsibility to lead the flock over which God has placed me as a pastor, in the way that He says we should go.  This would include what I teach my flock is God’s definition of the truth.  On Judgment Day God is not going to ask me if I was popular with the people or the community, but if I "earnestly contended for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints" (Jude 3).  After all, God has made His church "the pillar and ground of the truth"  (I Tim. 3:15).  I believe I would be a failure in the pastorate if I were not faithful to the truth.

Faith vs. Science

ISBN: 978-0-9779407-8-3

FAITH vs. SCIENCE: The Unnecessary Dichotomy will help clarify the debate on science and religion and (hopefully) provide a safe middle ground for discussion of this issue in various educational curricula.

The author, Dr. Jerome Goddard, is a world recognized scientist and a leading authority on entomology for the Mississippi Department of Health in Jackson, MS. He lectures and consults on numerous issues world-wide and is the author of a best selling book on medical entomology.

Scientific advances over the past 150 years have created a dilemma for Christians who try to live a life of faith in an increasingly secular world.  Many scientific findings seem directly opposed to the Christian faith.  Further, recent technological advances such as stem cell research and cloning pose serious moral and ethical questions.  How does a Christian respond to complex scientific facts and theories? This book, written by a scientist, explains current scientific phenomena in light of Christian teaching and will help the reader integrate faith and reason.
